An occasional cat sneezing is normal and is not a real cause for discomfort, as it is in humans, but sometimes cats sneeze more frequently and this may be a sign of illness.

If your cat’s sneezing doesn’t go away, or if other symptoms develop with sneezing, you may need to see your vet see if treatment is necessary.

Causes of frequent cat sneezing

If your cat sneezes a lot, your vet may initially suspect a cause based on a review of your cat’s symptoms, and infection is one of the main causes of sneezing.

In some cases, your vet may take a swab from the mouth, throat, eyes, or nose and send it to a laboratory to confirm infection. Inhaled irritants or allergens are other common causes of sneezing in cats.

Viral, bacterial, or fungal infections could be another cause of infection for your cat, as these infections are more common in kittens, especially those that come from animal shelters or are on the street.

Viral infections that cause sneezing in cats are:

Feline herpes virus:

Cats get herpes from exposure to other infected cats, and treatment aims to control symptoms, and the feline herpes virus is not contagious to humans.

This virus is highly contagious among cats, and it causes mouth ulcers to be the most common problem, but it can affect the respiratory system and even cause pneumonia. This infection may make your cat more likely to develop other respiratory problems that can worsen sneezing.

Feline infectious peritonitis:

It may not cause any symptoms, mild symptoms, or more severe symptoms over time.

Feline immunodeficiency virus:

It develops slowly but severely affects the cat’s immune system, making the cat vulnerable to other infections

Inhalation irritants or triggers Another cause of sneezing:

If your cat sneezes occasionally, something might be irritating the nasal passages. Look for your cat’s sneezing patterns. Does this happen after the candles are lit? Or after your cat leaves the litter box? Or after I cleaned the house?

These are all examples of potential irritants or allergens (substances that cause allergic reactions) in cats:

  • Cigarette smoke
  • Perfume
  • Pest spray
  • Cat litter, especially the species that generate dust
  • Candles
  • Dust
  • Vaccine

Cat sneezing and other symptoms

  • Eye discharge, swelling or ulcers
  • Excessive nasal secretions
  • fatigue or depression

When do you need a doctor?

If your cat sneezes occasionally and has no other symptoms or only mild symptoms, you may want to simply monitor it for a few days.

Keep your cat indoors and watch for changes, but be sure to call your vet if your cat sneezes frequently or frequently, sneezes for blood, or shows other signs such as those listed above.
