What is a black comedy? “Dark comedy”

Dark Comedy, otherwise known as Black Comedy, or even Dark Comedy, is a type of comedy where topics, serious or painful to discuss, that are taboo in society are dealt with in a satirical manner.

The main topics highlighted are death, violence, crime, homicide, suicide, insanity, disability, environmental disasters, political corruption, poverty, starvation, disease, drug abuse, child abuse, animal abuse, rape, castration, and eating Cannibals, war, terrorism, racism, sexism, homophobia, stereotypes, and their wraps.

In literature, drama, and cinema, black comedy is used to express the absurdity, insensitivity, paradox, and cruelty of the modern world, and ordinary characters or situations are often exaggerated beyond the confines of ordinary satire or irony.

Black comedy origin

In the 1930s, the French surrealist novelist André Breton was analyzing the works of Irish writer Jonathan Swift, especially A Modest Proposal; A Humble Suggestion, a hilarious act of ending starvation by devouring children, Brenton coined the term in his Anthology of Black Humor; i.e. “Anthology of Black Humor”, and Jonathan Swift is credited as the originator of the black comedy in the 18th century.

Cinema and black comedy

The black comedy hit the big screen with black comedy films like Frank Capra’s Arscenic, Old Lace, The Ladykillers, Dr. Strangelove, culminating in the 1970s and 1980s with films such as Network, Harold, Maude, Mel Brook’s The Twelve Chairs, The King of Comedy, After Hours, Heathers, Ruthless People, Where’s Poppa? and Throw Momma, and by the 1990s, these films were Fairly common but great, but more commercial than previously presented include Election, Happiness, Quick Change, American Psycho, Trainspotting, Ed Wood, The Hudsucker Proxy, Fargo.

Between 2000 and 2010, films such as Bad Santa, Horrible Bosses, Death at a Funeral, Burn after Reading, Coffee and Cigarettes, World’s Greatest Dad, and God Bless America were made with much lower budgets and took time to harvest. Notable success at the box office.

The number of acts has decreased, they are becoming farther and farther apart, and now we are fortunate to get a distinct black comedy every five years. Contributing to this decline are the barrier factor and the limits. The comedy can thrive as long as there are limits and barriers to cross, but over time and with many of them broken, what is left to explore?

Over time, impossible things become possible, which drains the sense of humor in situations. What once seemed funny to be so unbelievable that it seems unreal may later seem familiar and banal.

The most recent release was the South Korean film Parasite with a dark comedy style, and it was a stinging critique of the endless class struggle between prosperity and despair.

Black comedy features

  • It is usually characterized by boldness and humor, but away from vulgarity and insults, as it is not just a joke, and some of the works in it focus on situational comedy, and the most famous example of this is the movie Dr. Strangelove, a horrific comedic treatment of the circumstances surrounding the dropping of an atomic bomb.
  • Films that alternate between comedy and tragedy, such as Full Metal Jacket, are not black comedy; Black comedy, by definition, draws irony from the tragic parts, dealing with the negative aspects of life with shocking and unexpected humor.
  • Black comedy can derive its sense of humor through cartoonish exaggeration (without entering the realm of uncomfortable realism); In the movie A Fish Called Wanda, the animal-loving killer accidentally runs over the old lady’s dog, so that the scene of the dead dog is filmed with realistic bloody effects, which angered the audience and was not funny, so the scene was returned to the dog simply to become flat as in the cartoon Wile E. Coyote The famous, far from disturbing realism, the scene became funny despite its tragic.
  • This comedy is not associated with black, black (Jack Black and Louis Black), or African-American comedians like Dick Gregory, Eddie Murphy, or Chris Rock, although a number of them in the presentation of black comedy works.

Finally, your reaction may indicate your intelligence; According to a study published in the journal Cognitive Processing, a team of psychologists concluded that those who value dark comedy may have higher IQs, lower aggression, and resist negative emotions more effectively than those who disdain it.
