8th habit From Effectiveness to Greatness and the Concept of the Scarcity and Abundance Mindset

Most of us have read or heard before about the seven most effective habits of “Stephen Covey”, but – in my estimation – most of us may not know that “Covey” missed urging us on an important habit that he did not mention in the book “The Seven Habits”, and I think that at the time he was in a position Unenviable, and he probably asked himself often if he should reissue the book anew to include an eighth habit.

He did not find it easy, so he decided to sing a book independent of it, and in fact, he did well, not because he singled out a book for the eighth habit only, or because it deserves it. but also because on a personal level I sided with number 7 in my life in general, and perhaps this is what prompted me I read the book, The Seven Habits, and loved it, the book still bears the title of my favorite number.

It is now possible to talk about “the mentality of scarcity and the mentality of abundance”, but before that – and to begin with – I want to clarify something else. and make it very clear to those who have not yet read the book of the Seven Habits – and of course I highly recommend it to him for reading – these habits were summed up in: :

  1. Be proactive.
  2. Start with the end in mind.
  3. Rank your priorities.
  4. Always think of a win-win option.
  5. Seek to understand others so that they can understand you.
  6. Creative Collaboration/Synergy: 1+1 is greater than 2.
  7. And finally, Habit Seven, Sharpen the Saw, which says:

“In order to be able to continue giving, giving and sacrificing, you must maintain your balance in this life. by resting and maintaining worship, reading and learning, volunteering and giving good.. and do not forget yourself, for yourself has a right over you.”

This thing is related to funny behavior, which we notice in some weddings related to the “buffet”, specifically at the moment when the guests scramble for food. and this scramble is often random and unorganized, and the situation is not without voices and calls for calls to organize this randomness through a queue or queues. Rather, these calls for order quickly died down, along with the sounds of teddy bears flocking to the buffet.

When we analyze this situation, we can divide the invitees into two parts. we put each of them on one side.

  • The first aspect: its members believe that the food in the buffet will not suffice all the invitees, and sees the presence of other pilgrims as a threat to their chances of reaching a meal from it, and believes that this situation can only be tolerated by one winner – themselves of course – and another loser from the others.. The others, whoever they are. .
  • The second side: On the contrary, he believes in the opposite, of course he wants to have the same meal, but he is convinced that the food is abundant, and everyone will suffice, and they may even help others to reach the buffet before them.. the others are whoever they are.

The first side dealt with the buffet with the “scarcity mentality”, while the second side dealt with the “abundance mentality”.

Habit 8: From Effectiveness to Greatness

Away from the previous buffet example, which was only for approximation and simplicity, we return to the subject of the book The 8th habit: From Effectiveness to Greatness, in which Stephen Covey argues that we should get used to:

  • Finding our inner voice, helping others find theirs, discovering our passion for doing things we love to do and being proud of. helping others discover their passions and being inspired by them.
  • The certainty that there are two mentalities that control the people around us, we find them in our daily lives, at work, in the environment of friends, in the family… and in everything.

The first: the mentality of abundance, which sees that the successes of others do not pose a threat to them and that the opportunities in this life are unlimited. and that helping others will not harm, so if others are praised, they are praised, and if others succeed, I rejoice for them, and that his opportunity will come and no one delays it.

The second: the mentality of scarcity and sees in every success of others as a threat, they seek every available and unavailable opportunity to the same extent that they hide every possible opportunity that can be made available to others. and he is not convinced that he can succeed except on his own, and he sees the success of others as a failure for him personally, and certainly, He will only help himself, because – from his perspective – helping the other would be a threat to him.

The abundance mentality, the scarcity mentality, and everything in between

The manifestations of thinking in both mindsets can be summarized in the following points:

Those who think with the mentality of scarcity find:

  • They are afraid that others will succeed.
  • They are afraid to praise others.
  • He does not share information or knowledge, because he thinks that if someone else succeeds, he is a loser.
  • He is afraid to let people know how he succeeded and how he developed; I mean, people are afraid to take his place.

While we find the one who thinks with the mentality of abundance:

  • Calm assured.
  • He is not threatened by the successes of others, but rather praises their successes and praises them.
  • People share his experiences, knowledge and information.

There is a multiplicity of similar propositions on many points and angles when talking about this topic. I realized this from the reality of my reading about it in more than one place. most of which revolve around the book of the eighth habit.

Others are in the same astronomy, and I suggest “cliches” and resonant phrases. calling for the love of good for everyone as we love it for ourselves.

And other values and principles that we know and are aware of within us; But we don’t know the way to put it into practice – unless my Lord has mercy.

A friend of mine taught me that when I end something, I always end it with something nice, and therefore, I will end the article with a note that I always notice when I meditate on the streets. and it may be touching, and it is a note related to street cats and dogs.

Try to put some amount of food for a group of street cats or dogs, and then go away, you will notice by watching them that they will not fight over it. but you will also notice that they organize themselves to eat in succession. and whoever arrives late waits until he finishes who arrived first to the place of food, and they have excluded from this system “Innate” young cats and young dogs.

We do not, and we will not, of course, know how cats do it, or how they do it, but we are sure that cats have not read Stephen Covey’s Eighth Habit, and you will not.
